17 Tops That Make Petite Women Look Taller

Petite woman wearing a fitted black cropped top with high-waisted black jeans, illustrating tops for petite women, flattering tops for short women, and tops that make petite women look taller.

I’m 5’3″, and I’ve spent years figuring out what tops actually work on a smaller frame. The truth is, most tops aren’t designed with petite women in mind.

They’re made for average-height women, which means they can often be too long or too oversized. Instead of fitting a petite frame properly, they can end up making you look like you’re wearing someone else’s outfit.

But here’s what I’ve learned. Certain types of tops can make a big difference when you’re petite. They don’t just fit better. They can make your legs look longer and give your whole outfit a better shape without making you look like you’re trying too hard.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the tops petite women should wear, what to look for when choosing them, and why certain styles work better on a smaller frame.

Best Tops for Petite Women

Fitted Turtlenecks for Petite Women

A fitted turtleneck is one of the best tops for petite women because of how it fits your body. The high collar draws attention up toward your face, while the fitted shape shows your figure instead of hiding it under extra fabric.

When you’re petite, loose and oversized tops can make you look smaller. A fitted turtleneck does the opposite. It gives your torso some definition and creates a clear line from your neck down to your waist, which can make you look taller.

The thickness of the fabric matters too. A quality turtleneck in merino wool or cashmere has some weight to it. It doesn’t cling to your body, but it isn’t baggy either.

It just fits well. And when a top fits well, it can change how the whole outfit looks on a petite frame.

Wear a fitted turtleneck tucked into high-waisted pants or a skirt. Tucking in the top helps create more length through your outfit. The fitted top and high waist work together to create a longer line from your upper body down to your feet.

Cropped Tops for Petites

A cropped top ends around your waist or just above your hip.

The length is what matters, not the type of top. A cropped sweater, cropped blouse, cropped T-shirt, or cropped anything can work because of where it hits on your body.

For petite women, a regular-length top can hit well below your hips and make your legs look shorter. A cropped top hits closer to your natural waist, which helps create balance and shows where your waist actually is.

When a top hits at your waist, you can clearly see where your upper body ends and your lower body begins. This gives your outfit more definition and helps your frame look longer.

Wear any cropped top with high-waisted bottoms. The top ends at your waist, and the high waistband sits right around the same area. There’s no gap or extra fabric hanging down, so the whole outfit looks more streamlined and creates more length.

A fitted cropped top is better than an oversized cropped top for petite women. Even when it’s cropped, an oversized top can still add too much volume. A fitted top shows more of your natural body shape, which is what you want when you’re petite.

Fitted Button-Down Shirts for Petite Women

A fitted button-down shirt is a wardrobe essential for petite women, but it has to actually fit. Not oversized. Not a “boyfriend fit.” It should fit your body properly.

Standard button-down shirts are usually made for average-height women, so the sleeves can be too long for petite arms. The shirt can also hang past your hips and down toward your thighs, making your legs look shorter. The neckline can be too large as well.

The solution is to look for petite-specific button-downs or brands that offer shorter lengths. When a button-down is made for a petite frame, the sleeves hit closer to your wrist, the shirt ends around your hip instead of your thigh, and the neckline is a better fit for your frame.

Tuck a fitted button-down into high-waisted pants or a skirt. This shows your waist and gives the outfit more definition. That’s the easiest way to make a button-down work when you’re petite.

V-Neck Tops for Petite Women

A V-neck neckline creates a vertical line down your body. The V-shape draws the eye down, which can make your upper body look longer. A deeper V-neck creates more of that vertical line than a shallow one.

This works with any type of V-neck top, be it sweaters, blouses, T-shirts, or even camisoles. It’s the neckline that creates the effect, not the type of top.

A fitted V-neck worn untucked over high-waisted bottoms gives you both effects. The V-neck creates a longer line through your upper body, while the high waist adds length from your waist down. Together, they can make your frame look longer.

For petite women, V-neck tops are some of the easiest options because they’re simple and work with so many outfits.

Peplum Tops for Petite Women

A peplum top has a fitted body that flares out at the hips. The ruffle or flare sits right at your waist or just below it.

For petite women, this shape works because it defines your waist without making you look wider.

The peplum fits closely through your torso and flares just enough to add some shape. It’s not oversized or loose. It shows your body shape while adding a little movement.

Whenever you wear a peplum top, pair it with fitted bottoms. The fitted top and bottoms keep the outfit looking streamlined, while the peplum adds some interest without making the outfit feel too busy.

Camisoles and Tank Tops for Petites

Fitted camisoles and tank tops are useful for petite women because they’re the foundation of layering.

Wear a fitted cami under a sweater or a fitted tank under an open shirt. These simple basics give you a good base without adding extra bulk.

When you layer a fitted cami under other clothes, everything stays clean and defined. You’re not adding unnecessary volume, so the layers don’t overwhelm a smaller frame.

Look for petite-specific camisoles when you can. The length will be shorter so it doesn’t hang past your hips, and the straps may be narrower for a smaller frame. The better the fit, the easier these basics are to layer.

Wrap Tops for Petite Women

A wrap top ties at your waist, which means you can adjust where the waistline sits. For petite women, this is useful because you can position the waistline where it looks best on your body.

Wrap tops come in different styles, but they all tie or wrap around your body. This gives you more definition and lets you show your waist.

The key is to tie it so the knot sits at your natural waist. Not too high and not too low. Right at your waist. This helps create a balanced look on a petite frame.

Fitted Polo Shirts for Petite Women

A polo is a fine-knit top with a collar and a small V-shaped opening at the neckline.

It’s fitted without being tight, and it has more structure than a basic T-shirt. For petite women, it’s a good option when you want something that feels a little more dressed up without being too formal.

You can either keep it tucked or untucked, but tucking it in can help create more length through your outfit.  I personally tuck mine in, so that’s what I’d suggest trying.

Wear a knit polo with tailored pants or a skirt. It’s easy to dress up or down, so you can wear it for casual days or slightly dressier occasions.

One-Shoulder Tops for Petite Women

A one-shoulder top has one sleeve with the other shoulder exposed. The uneven neckline adds visual interest, and the diagonal line can make your upper body look longer.

One-shoulder tops should be fitted enough for the neckline and exposed shoulder to stand out. A loose one-shoulder top can hide those details and make the shape less noticeable.

Vertical Striped Tops for Petite Women

Vertical stripes can help a petite woman look taller because the lines naturally draw the eye up and down. If you’re choosing a striped top, look for vertical stripes rather than horizontal ones when you want to create a longer-looking frame.

For petite women, vertical stripes are an easy way to add the appearance of height without doing much else. Pair a vertically striped top with solid bottoms and let the stripes do the work.

Fitted Blouses With Details for Petite Women

A fitted blouse with details like ruffles, lace, or embroidery around the neckline or sleeves draws attention to your upper body. For petite women, that extra attention toward the top of the outfit can help create the appearance of more height.

The important part is keeping the blouse fitted through the torso. The details are just an added touch. You’re not trying to add bulk. You’re simply adding some interest where it helps most.

Cropped Tank Tops for Petite Women

A cropped tank top that hits right around your natural waist is great for layering over longer pieces or wearing with high-waisted bottoms. You can actually see where your waist is instead of having it covered by extra fabric.

That’s why the length matters so much. An oversized tank can hide your shape, while a fitted cropped tank lets you see your waist and the way your body is naturally shaped. For petite women, that can make your frame look longer.

Mock-Neck Tops for Petite Women

A mock-neck is a high collar that doesn’t wrap completely around your neck like a turtleneck. It’s structured without fully closing around your neck. It sits high and creates a vertical line.

For petite women, a mock-neck draws attention toward your face and creates that upward pull. It’s a more modern option than a turtleneck while giving you a similar effect.

You can find mock-necks on sweaters, T-shirts, and long-sleeve tops. The neckline is what creates the effect.

Try a mock-neck tucked into high-waisted bottoms for more length through your outfit. The high neckline and high waist work together to create a longer line.

Crew-Neck Tops for Petite Women

A crew-neck is a round neckline that sits close to your neck without coming up as high as a turtleneck. It’s a classic, simple neckline that works well on a petite frame when the top itself is fitted.

An oversized crew-neck can overwhelm a petite frame, while a fitted one shows more of your natural shape without adding extra bulk.

Crew-necks work on T-shirts, sweaters, and long-sleeve tops. Since the neckline is simple, you can let the rest of the outfit do more of the work.

Pair a fitted crew-neck with high-waisted bottoms for a simple, easy outfit.

Scoop-Neck Tops for Petite Women

A scoop-neck has a deeper, rounded neckline. Think of it as a softer version of a V-neck. The neckline opens up more of your upper body without the sharper shape of a V.

For petite women, a scoop-neck can create some length without looking as dramatic as a V-neck. It’s a softer, more subtle way to open up the neckline.

Scoop-necks work on T-shirts, tanks, sweaters, and camisoles.

A fitted scoop-neck top with high-waisted bottoms can create more length through your outfit. The open neckline draws the eye down, while the high waist helps define where your lower body begins.

Off-Shoulder Tops for Petite Women

An off-shoulder top exposes one or both shoulders. That exposed shoulder creates a horizontal line across the top of your body, which can help balance a petite frame.

The top should be fitted through the torso. An oversized off-shoulder top can add too much bulk and hide the shape you’re trying to create.

Off-shoulder tops come in sweaters, blouses, T-shirts, and camisoles.

Wear an off-shoulder top with fitted or high-waisted bottoms to create a defined shape.

Boat-Neck Tops for Petite Women

A boat-neck is a wide, straight neckline that runs across your collarbone. It’s wide but sits fairly high on your body. For petite women, the width around the shoulders can help create balance without adding a lot of extra volume.

It also shows your shoulders and collarbone, which adds some visual interest to a smaller frame.

Boat-neck tops come in sweaters, T-shirts, and blouses.

Pair a fitted boat-neck with high-waisted bottoms. The wider neckline works well with a fitted torso and defined waist.

What Tops To Avoid As a Petite Woman

Now that we’ve covered what works, let’s talk about what doesn’t work as well for petite women.

Oversized Tops: An oversized top can swallow a petite frame.

Instead of looking casually oversized, it can end up looking like you’re wearing someone else’s shirt. You can still wear oversized pieces if that’s your style, but balance them with very fitted bottoms so the extra volume doesn’t overwhelm you.

Regular-Length Sweaters: These can be too long for petite women. They often hit around the middle of your hips or even lower, which can make your legs look shorter.

If you love sweaters, look for petite sizing or cropped versions that hit closer to your waist.

Boyfriend-Fit Button-Downs: These can be tricky on petite women. What looks oversized and relaxed on someone taller can simply look too big on a smaller frame.

A fitted button-down designed for your frame will usually give you a better fit than taking a regular button-down several sizes too big.

Baggy Turtlenecks: These can work against the effect you’re trying to create. The fitted high collar is part of what makes a turtleneck useful for petite women.

When the entire top is loose and bulky, you lose that defined shape. If you want to wear a loose turtleneck, balance it with fitted bottoms.

Long Tunics: Tunics that hit below your hips can make a petite frame look shorter. If you love tunics, look for ones that hit at or above your hips instead.

That keeps more of your legs visible and gives your outfit a better sense of length.
